This painting is part of a group in which I’m remembering looking down from the top of Sutton Bank, North Yorkshire. Sutton Bank is a massive inland cliff face, created by a vast ice sheet exerting immense force as it moved between the Pennines and the North Yorkshire Moors-it was created about 20,000 years ago during the last Ice Age.
I’m fascinated by places that form boundaries; that have edges where the land changes…here there is the drama of the cliff face and a huge landscape beyond which spreads out in patterns and layers. These paintings are about layers in both landscape and in paint. Layers in paint because my work is always built up in many layers, which I enjoy scraping back to reveal what has gone before.
