Part of a little series I’m working on exploring walks that are close by…luckily I had put together loads of material before the lockdown, and these paintings come from some of the sketches and notes I did earlier in the year. This painting comes from totally different weather conditions to the other paintings so far in this series; ‘Ancient Way’ and ‘Between the Rocks’.

Great Almscliffe Crag is a dramatic set of weird and atmospheric rocks, made of Milstone Grit, which stand on the top of a hill between Stainburn and North Rigton.

As you walk through the rocks there are gullies and ravines between, and far reaching views out over the landscape beyond. In this piece I was particularly interested in all the facets and layers in the rocks, which are fascinating.

The title refers to the fact that the rocks are Milstone Grit, and harder than the surrounding landscape, which was eroded away over time.
