Local walk during Lockdown April 2020

Hi Everyone and welcome to my April Newsletter!

I think things have settled down a bit this month, or at least I think we’re all settling into a new routine… ‘still all feels strange, but for me a daily walk really helps me get going, then I can get home, head for the studio and at least try to have a productive day!

The photo above is from a regular one of these ‘from home’ walks, and I thought I would include it because it’s very striking to me, how much the colours I’m seeing permeate through into my work, especially my colour palette….I’m really liking the bright vibrant spring colours, which are not my usual colours at all!

I’ve been continuing with material in my sketchbook, from Great Almscliffe Crag, and I’m currently working on a little group of paintings with this fresh new palette…

In the shot above, you can see the kind of visual notes I tend to make outside; colour samples and swatches and loose, expressive paintings that act as starting points for developing work…

This is the first of this little series. ‘Great Almescliffe Crag: Ancient Way’

This is the first completed work in this little group; it is made up in a great many layers with a mix of translucent and opaque sections, and s’grafitto work building depth, (41cm x 41cm canvas-acrylics and mixed media).

I’m excited about the way it has turned out; Great Almscliffe Crag is a very special site with a long and in some cases rather mysterious history… I wanted to convey a sense of this, combined with a feeling of what it’s like to be there, exposed to the power of the wind, and with a vast open landscape stretching out beyond… Oh and see what I mean about colours!!

More to come on this little group next time, but as a little taster the picture below shows work in progress on the second one…

*Exciting news though, after thinking everything was cancelled, finally some good news! North Yorkshire Open Studios, is now going to run as an online event with about 65 artists currently filming themselves, their studios, and loads of new work ready to be uploaded to Facebook and Instagram.

NYOS Online!!

I have also been busy filming- all very embarrassing to be honest, and quite tricky; talking to camera is definitely an art! More details next month but the event will take place over the first two weekends in June: 6th and 7th June & 13th and 14th June. Be the first to know what’s happening by following me on Instagram and Facebook as JoYorkArt.

**If you can’t wait until then, I have a designated page on my website showing new work which is currently available. To purchase simply email me and I can take a hassle free and secure card payment, and your chosen painting will be winging its way to you!

*If you’re interested in finding out more about any of the work shown, please email: jo@joyorkart.co.uk

**Make sure you don’t miss my monthly newsletters by signing up…I won’t be bombarding you with stuff, just one monthly email with news of what I’ve been up to, and latest available work, and you’ll be the first to know about shows…when they do start up again! https://mailchi.mp/bed694f176ce/jo-york-art-newsletter

Above all, in these strange times, take care and keep in touch, Jo x
